When I was young I used to play a lot of tennis. There was this girl in my tennis squad called Sammi who was older and taller than me, but seemed like she liked me. I definitely liked her. The other kids in the squad used to joke that she was my girlfriend. What they didn’t know, was that once we had been sitting together alone at a table. She had leaned towards me and said, “you’re cute.” I had never kissed a girl before and I was awkward, terrified, and had no idea what to do. So I diffused the tension by saying, “you know, cute means ugly but interesting.” She backed off and never put herself out there again; it was years before I actually kissed somebody.
